University Middle School Boys Soccer team brought talent and spirit to the pitch for their first season – and then brought home the District Championship. The boys were undefeated in their district games and then faced tough competition from Sullivan Central, defeating them 6-1 to make it to the championship game.
Seventh grader Cooper Booth started off the championship game against the Pioneers with a free kick goal from the halfway line. Booth then followed it up with a kick from the mark to bring it to 2-0. Late in the first half, 8th grader Mason Winfield followed with a goal from the top of the six to bring it to 3-0 at the end of the first half. The Pioneers came back with a goal after halftime, but the Bucs’ defense held strong through the second half to bring home the championship. As center back David Nunez said, “I knew we could win, but we could not have done it without teamwork and the desire to win.”
Booth remarked after the game “I felt like our team came together and played really well tonight. Thanks to our coaches, we worked hard this season to get to tonight’s win and it was definitely a whole team effort. The Pioneers are a great team and gave us good competition! I’m happy that our first-year team ended up as champions! Go BUCS!”
Coach Morgan Richards shared "Winning the middle school championship in our first year of the program is truly amazing! We owe our success to leadership of our 8th graders and captains and the hard work from everyone else on the team. We also want to express our gratitude to the parents and families for their tremendous support throughout the season. This championship is a testament to the dedication of everyone involved, and we are proud to have accomplished this milestone together."
