Middle School Honoree – Lucy Smith (8th Grade)

Lucy is very kind and caring when it comes to her classmates. She is always respectful to her teachers. She is quick to say thank you, and ask questions when she doesn't understand. She excels both in and outside of the classroom. She works hard and it shows!

Getting to know Lucy:

  • What is a special talent you possess that most people don't know about?

“I don’t know if most people know about this, but they might.  I’m in Bluegrass band called ‘Roan Street Ramblers.’  We like to play around the area, but sometimes play out of state also.  I play the fiddle and the mandolin as well as sing.”

  • What quality do you think is most important in a great teacher?

“I would say understanding.  I think that’s important for teachers to understand who their students are and where they’re coming from.  Students have different situations and I think the best teachers get that and can individualize their teaching and expectations.”

  • What is something you've accomplished that you are particularly proud of?

“Qualifying for the state meet all three years in middle school in cross country.  That was challenging and took a lot of time and work.  I had to overcome injury in 7th grade and in 8th grade we had to compete in the larger-schools division and they didn’t take nearly as many qualifiers.  That’s something I’m proud of.”

“Lucy is one of the kindest, smartest, and most talented students we have on our team, said Ms. Leah Darnell, Lucy’s ELA teacher.  “She makes school more fun for everyone!”
