University School HIPAA FERPA Release Concussion Screening
Hello high school girls soccer parents! We are excited to announce that University High School is beginning a new pilot concussion management program through a partnership with ETSU Athletics. University High is the first such school to undertake this program. Initially, this partnership will cover only high school girls soccer participants as they will be the only athletes to undergo baseline testing at this time. Soccer was selected due to its status as a contact sport (through TSSAA) as well as being one of the first sports of the 2021-22 school year.
While the program will begin with women’s soccer at UH, the goal of the concussion management team is to assess the possibility of increasing participation of other sports’ athletes throughout the year. It should be noted that athletes in other sports will still receive care and appropriate steps will still be taken for concussion management, though they will not be involved in baseline testing at this time.
In order to participate in the program, parents must complete and return the required paperwork (links above) by Friday, July 23rd. Baseline testing will be performed on July 21 through July 23. This baseline testing will take approximately 45-60 minutes per student and will involve five tests assessing different aspects of their neurocognitive function. The baseline testing will occur during the school day. Should the student sustain a head injury moving forward, the students will be assessed and referred for repeat testing if a concussion is suspected. Those scores will be compared to the baseline scores along with their clinical evaluation to determine the extent of the injury and provide feedback on their recovery.
