Congratulations to Ms. Carol Ann Bevan, who was awarded the University School Innovative Faculty Award at the annual CCOE Honors Day Ceremony and Reception. She was selected by her peers at University School based on her outstanding ability to inspire and motivate in the classroom. During her time at University School, Ms. Bevan has taught middle school English as well as all levels of high school English. She currently teaches Advanced Placement Literature and Composition, English 10, The Literature of World Religions, and Creative Writing.
A dynamic teacher, Ms. Bevan has a demanding curriculum and an engaging teaching style that challenges students to think deeply, ask questions, and explore possibilities. Her love of literature and the humanities is communicated to students in such a way that they are able to make connections between subjects and see the relevance of the subject matter to their own lives. She works to help students find their voice in writing and has a strong commitment to social justice.
Ms. Bevan has created numerous innovative lesson plans and activities over her years as an educator, but her greatest innovation is to consistently create a classroom community that nurtures independent thought, creativity, and genuine curiosity. Walk into her classroom on any given day, and you will find a student-centered environment where students are engaged in discussion and grappling with ideas. As a result, they are well-prepared for the expectations of college.
A gifted teacher who is beloved by her students and respected by her peers, Ms. Bevan is the kind of teacher students never forget. Teaching is not just her vocation; it is her calling.
