Guidance, Tools, & Resources to Support Student Success
Supporting student success requires proactive, accessible guidance to help all learners thrive, especially those navigating college systems for the first time. Adjunct and part-time faculty play a key role in normalizing the use of academic and personal support services by clearly explaining expectations and the resources available to students.
Academic Support Includes:
-
Demystifying Office Hours & Email
Share with students the why, when, and how to effectively use office hours to maximize their success in college.
- Reasons to attend office hours
- When and how to attend office hours
- Using Office Hours Effectively – The Learning Center
- Consider calling them "student hours" so that students know this time is for them
Go over the reasons students should email you and how:
- Scenarios that may be appropriate for email
- Situations that may be better to approach in-person or on Zoom
- Important components of an effective email
- Effective Email Communication – The Writing Center

Using Academic Alerts
Academic Alerts allow faculty and staff to collaborate to support students through proactive outreach, resources, and guidance, fostering a network of care that promotes successful course completion and long-term academic success. Some alerts will trigger case creations for the Center for Academic Achievement and Dean of Students. Other alerts generate email reminders to students.
Faculty are encouraged to submit Academic Alerts (Progress Reports) via Navigate360 for students in their course(s) weeks 3, 4, and 5 of the semester.
Course instructors can provide early feedback on
- Class Attendance
- Missing Assignments
- D2L Engagement/logins
- Tutoring Support
- Non-academic Support
Student Well-Being
Faculty should also remain attentive to students’ well-being, referring them to counseling and mental health services when appropriate. By consistently highlighting and reinforcing these resources, instructors can help students build confidence, resilience, and a stronger connection to the institution.

The purpose of the Center for Teaching Excellence is to foster success for all students by nurturing excellence in teaching. We attempt to offer approaches that encourage pedagogical well-being, which includes the well-being of students as well as instructors. While these offerings vary by semester, our Four Teaching Essentials workshops and guides include good tips for helping students feel connected and supported in class.
