Financial aid to assist students with educational expenses

Grants are a type of financial aid to assist students with educational expenses. Grants, unlike loans, usually do not have to be repaid.

How do I apply for grants?

Who is eligible for grants?

  • Most grants require evidence of the student's "need".  Need is determined by using the information provided to the institution from the student's FAFSA.
  • Find out if you meet general eligibility requirements for financial aid.
  • Generally, grants are awarded only to undergraduate students who have not yet earned a bachelor's degree.
  • A student may be eligible for grants if enrolled full-time, part-time, or less than part-time.
  • A student may not receive federal or state grants at more than one school at a time.

What types of grants are available?

 

  • Federal Pell Grant
    • Federally funded awards granted to undergraduate students with exceptional financial need who have not received a bachelor's degree
    • Awards vary based on need and hours of enrollment
    • A student must file a FAFSA to be considered for eligibility
    • A student who is selected for verification must complete that process to be considered for eligibility

  • Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grant (SEOG)
    • Federally funded awards granted to undergraduate students who are Federal Pell Grant eligible, with priority given to students with a high need
    • Awards vary depending on the date the student's file is complete in the Office of Financial Aid at ETSU, the student's need, and the funding level and policies of the Office of Financial Aid at ETSU
    • A student must file a FAFSA to be considered for eligibility
    • A student who is selected for verification must complete that process to be considered for eligibility
    • Annual Award Amounts $100 - $4,000
  • Tennessee Student Assistance Award (TSAA)
    • State funded awards granted to financially needy undergraduate students who are residents of Tennessee and enrolled at a public or an eligible non-public postsecondary educational institution in Tennessee
    • Students must be enrolled at least half-time
    • Awards are limited and based on funding, with first priority given to U.S. citizens.  Awards are made until funds are depleted
    • The maximum award amount is determined by the TSAC Board of Directors prior to the beginning of the fall term
    • No student will receive an award greater than the amount of tuition and mandatory fees assessed by the institution attended
    • A student must file a FAFSA to be considered for eligibility.
    • Students must meet all eligibility requirements and have their FAFSA completed and error free on or before February 1 to receive grant renewals
    • A student who is selected for verification must complete that process to be considered for eligibility
    • Award recipients at ETSU may receive TSAA awards for a maximum of 8 semesters or until the program of study is complete (whichever comes first)
  • Tennessee Dual Enrollment Grant
    Students who have completed the sophomore or junior year in high school may be eligible to enroll for ETSU courses while in high school. Visit our Admissions Website for more information.
  • TEACH Grant
    • A grant of up to $4,000 per year (prorated based on enrollment and attendance)
    • Awarded to students who intend to teach in a public or private elementary or secondary school that serves students from low-income families
    • Awardees must fulfill an Agreement to Serve and meet certain eligibility requirements including the following:
    • Must be at least of Junior classification
    • Must have a combined higher education GPA of at least 3.25
    • Must be enrolled in an undergraduate, post-baccalaureate or Master Level program of study that will lead to a degree related to High Need Fields as determined by the Dept of Education. ETSU College of Education provides to the Office of Financial Aid a list of programs eligible for TEACH under the DOE guidelines
    • A student must file a FAFSA to be considered for eligibility
    • A student who is selected for verification must complete that process to be considered for eligibility
