6th grade: This is going to be a new and exciting year. Middle School can be a difficult transition, but we believe you are up for the challenge. We want you to learn new things and challenge your mindset. Instead of saying you are not good at something, say that you haven’t mastered it yet, but you are willing to learn. The 2020-2021 school year is going to be fabulous. Please let us know if you ever have any questions or concerns.
Sixth grade English Language Arts utilizes The TNReady standards, available at https://www.tn.gov/education/instruction/academic-standards/english-language-arts-standards.html, to provide a focus for instruction to ensure that students gain adequate exposure to a range of texts and tasks. Rigor is infused through the requirement that students read increasingly complex texts from a variety of genres both fiction and nonfiction. Students are expected to meet the 6th grade standards and retain or further develop skills and understandings mastered in preceding grades.
Sixth grade Mathematics will follow the TN Standards, which are available at https://www.tn.gov/education/instruction/academic-standards/mathematics-standards.html. These standards fall into five domains: the number system, ratios and proportional relationships, expressions and equations, geometry, and statistics. The major work of the grade falls within the first three domains: number system, ratios/proportional relationships, and expressions and equations.
Sixth grade Science will follow the TN standards, which are available at https://www.tn.gov/education/instruction/academic-standards/science-standards.html. The theme for sixth grade science is energy, which drives ecosystems, Earth’s natural resources and Earth’s processes. There is an additional focus on science literacy throughout the science and engineering practices, as well as using reliable sources of information to construct evidence-based arguments.
Sixth grade Social Studies will be following the TN Standards for Social Studies, available at http://www.tennessee.gov/assets/entities/education/attachments/std_ss_gr_6.pdf. These standards focus on Ancient World History. We will cover units from early man, early Africa, Mesopotamia, Egypt, Ancient Israel, India, China, Greece, and Rome.
In order to help students improve study skills and organization, Academic Planners are recommended in sixth grade. Students are responsible for bringing their academic planner to each in-person class every day. During virtual learning, students should refer to Canvas Calendar and ToDo List as their planners.
Composition notebooks (Social Studies)
2 - 1-inch Binder with pocket dividers (Math & Science/SS)
Notebook paper in binders
Supply pouch with pencils, pens, etc.
Book to read
Students will be notified when to bring their calculator to class. This will not be a daily material.
Texas Instruments TI-30X IIS Scientific Calculator
Each quarter, grades will be calculated by the total number of points accumulated out of the total number of possible points for all assessed activities.
A = 93-100
B = 86-92
C = 75-85
D = 70-74
F = 69 or below
Work is due according to due date but will be accepted late with a percentage of points lost. After one week past the due date, late work will no longer be accepted. Parents must email teachers immediately if there are technology issues that interfere with doing school work.
Absences and Make-up Work:
If students are ill, parents must inform the school at the start of the day in order for the absence to be considered excused. Students with excused absences will be able to turn in work late according to the school handbook. All work for remote learning will be accessible on Canvas. Students are responsible for checking to see what they have missed and then completing the work.
Students unable to attend synchronous learning sessions on Zoom will be expected to watch the missed session as soon as possible so as not to get behind. These sessions are essential to student success with the content.
