Little Mermaid Performance Date Change

Dear Little Mermaid parents and cast members,

Due to  the contract negotiations with the publishing company taking longer than anticipated, we are going to have to postpone our performances of Little Mermaid.  This is something that we have been working on since late July and progress is being made but we have not received approval yet.  We anticipate the contract to go through sometime in September.  Looking at October, there are two possible weekends for the show:  October 12-13 or October 26-27.  Please let me know if you have any conflicts for either of those dates.  We will continue with our current rehearsal schedule and add rehearsals September 10-14.  After break, we will resume rehearsals on Saturday, October 6.

Please accept my deepest apologies and let me know if you have any questions.

Greetings everyone,

Below is the tentative cast list and other information for University School's production of Little Mermaid, Jr.

Please let me know the following:

  1. If I need to add any other family members to the distribution list.
  2. If you have any questions.
  3. If you know of someone who is not on the list but wants to participate.

We will have a read through tomorrow (Wednesday, July 18) 3:15-5:00 in room 128 for everyone who can make it.  If you will be hungry before 5:00, bring a snack to eat before we start.  I will send out a detailed rehearsal schedule in the next day or two for rehearsals that will begin next Monday, July 23.  If you have not done so already, please turn in your audition form and be sure to include any recurring conflicts that you have so that we can try to work around them.

Show Notification

Dear Families,                                                                                                              July 13, 2018

On Wednesday, July 18, the University School performing arts department will begin rehearsals for our production of Disney’s Little Mermaid, Jr..  The cast will be composed of 3rd through 9th graders and your child has expressed an interest in being in this show.  Below are a few details to help you decide if this journey is the correct one for you child and your family.

  • Show dates are September 7 and 8, 2018
    • Your child will need to be at school those evenings at 4:30 to get ready (this is your call time)
    • Curtain time (when the show starts) is 7:00 both evenings
    • Both performances will be in the school gym
  • Rehearsals will be M, T, Th, F 3:15-5:30 and W 3:15-5:00
    • Your child will not need to be at all of the rehearsals. For instance, if your child is cast as a sailor, they will only need to be at rehearsals for scenes that include sailors.
    • Likewise, they will probably not need to be in rehearsal for the entire time on a given day. For instance, if the sailors practice 3:15-4:15 on a Tuesday, your child would be dismissed at 4:15 if they are a sailor.
  • Please take a moment to fill out the reverse side of this paper. I will try to schedule rehearsals around your reoccurring activities.  I will also need your child’s measurements for costuming.
  • Here are the dates that are certain at this point:
    • Saturday, August 18 – rehearsal
      • Practice applying make-up
        • Everyone should have his or her own kit!
      • Saturday, August 25 – rehearsal (remember there is in-service on Friday, August 24 so there will be no school that day)
      • Saturday, September 1 – rehearsal (Monday, September 3 is Labor Day)
      • Tuesday, September 5 – run with set, curtains, and all props, company (“company” means everyone)
      • Wednesday, September 5 – tech rehearsal, company
        • Lights
        • Sound
      • Thursday, September 6 – final dress rehearsal, company
        • Make-up
        • Costumes
        • Lights
        • Sound
      • September 7 and 8 – performances, University School Gym, company
        • 4:30 – Call
          • Your make-up should be on by 4:30!
          • Warm-up
          • Sound check
          • Final clean-up if needed
        • 7:00 - curtain

As always, please email me at if you have any questions.

Ms. Allyson Ross - University School Teacher of the Year Award
Congratulations to Ms. Allyson Ross who received this year's University School Teacher of the Year (Most Innovative Teacher) Award.

Ms. Allyson Ross brings music and song to the faculty, staff, and students of University School. Her love of music and theater is demonstrated daily in her work with the students. She brings out the best in students.

The choir and theater students have been hard at work all year long on different performances. She puts countless hours into the program (after school and on weekends) and her positive attitude has spread to the students as evidenced by increased enrollments in the theater program.

What a joy it is to walk into the building in the early morning and hear the sounds of the choir singing. It is an uplifting way to begin the day for faculty and students. The growth of her students has been simply amazing.

She has also been instrumental in helping our school become more "green" in words and in actions. She took the initiative to write a grant that provided us with reusable tableware to use. Her work towards getting the drinking fountain that fills water bottles shows her commitment to recycling and the environment.

The University School Chorus, pictured below, performed at the Clemmer College of Education Awards Ceremony.

Congratulations, Ms. Ross!

Good morning everyone,

This is a reminder that if school is canceled, rehearsals will also be canceled.  Please continue to work on memorizing your lines so that our next rehearsal will go smoothly.
