ASLHS is proud to sponsor the first nationwide scholarships available to students majoring or minoring in ASL, Deaf Studies, Deaf Education, and/or Interpreter Preparation. Current ASL scholarship amounts range between $1,000.00 and $3,000.00 each. Scholarships are offered to students who will begin college in the fall or are currently enrolled. Applicants must have an active chapter of the ASLHS on campus to be eligible. Under no circumstances will scholarships be awarded to students from campuses that are not members of ASLHS. ETSU has Tennessee’s first and only chapter of ASLHS. Your students would be eligible to apply for a scholarship if they declare ASL as their minor at ETSU. I am the advisor for the honor society at ETSU. Please feel free to reach out to me if you have any questions. My number is 423-439-5252. I would be willing to attend your dual enrollment night in the spring to speak to parents and students about our program at ETSU. Additionally your students are eligible to join our honor society after two semesters of ASL. They are eligible to earn high school graduation awards after ASL 3.
I look forward to hearing from you. Have a great weekend.

Our program provides four years of leadership development programming, full tuition, room and board, summer funding, grants to attend conferences and seminars and provides all of our scholars with the full rights and privileges to both campus communities. Our webinars will include a presentation from our selection director as well as alumni and current scholars. Attendees will have the ability to ask questions.
Hi Seniors-
Below you will find a link to read more about the Roan Scholars Program at ETSU. I am able to nominate one person to apply for the scholarship. Please let me know if you are interested, but please make sure that you meet the eligibility requirements before giving me your name.
Dr. Shaw
https://roanscholars.org/about/
Please let Dr. Shaw know if you think you might qualify for the following scholarship program and would like a nomination.
The Robertson Scholars Leadership Program application for the 2020-21 school year has opened. As a counselor at a high school who has sent us applicants in the past, we hope you will encourage your students to check out our program details if they are interested in leadership development and UNC-Chapel Hill and/or Duke University.
The 2020-21 Application can be accessed at:
https://robertsonscholars.embark.com/apply/hs2021 .
Our website and program information can be found at: www.robertsonscholars.org
The Robertson is among the most highly sought-after merit scholarships in the country. Our comprehensive program provides 4-years of tuition, room and board and mandatory fees, 3 fully-funded summer experiences, funding for conferences and seminars and unique access to the academic and extracurricular offerings on both campuses as well as four years of dedicated leadership development programming.
Our application deadline is November 15, 2020 for all materials and is independent of the admissions deadlines for UNC-Chapel Hill and Duke University. Students may apply for the Robertson regardless of whether they apply Early Action or Regular Decision at UNC-Chapel Hill and Early Decision or Regular Decision at Duke University.
It is worth noting that ideal Robertson candidates are students who appear destined to become leaders, not simply students with the best GPA or highest test scores. Traditionally the students who succeed in our selection process and in our program hold a passionate interest in something and show strong evidence of that passion in the activities they pursue.

Tennessee Scholars has a clear and focused mission: to increase the percentage of Tennessee high school graduates prepared for post-secondary education, the workforce, or the military. It is a rewards and incentives program for students who graduate high school with the required courses and additional expectations of attendance, discipline, and volunteer service. What are the benefits for graduating as a Tennessee Scholar? Tennessee Scholars requirements are the minimum requirements one needs to prepare for college. The benefits are scholarships to many Universities, job preferential hiring, recognition at graduation, obtaining the distinction of being a scholar that will be on your permanent record for the rest of your life. You can never go back and repeat high school so become a Tennessee Scholar today.
To become a Tennessee Scholar students complete a demanding high school curriculum that emphasizes “on level” and above courses in mathematics, science, social studies, language arts (English and foreign language), and computer literacy. The program also stresses the importance of attendance and dependability.
4 Units of English
4 Units of Math (Bridge Math does not count as a 4th Math for Tennessee Scholars) ( Successful completion of all competencies for Sails math will count)
3 Laboratory Sciences(Biology and Chemistry are required as 2 of those sciences)
3 Units of Social Studies
2 Units of Foreign Language
1 Units Fine Arts
Personal Finance as required by the State of Tennessee
Physical Education as required by the State of Tennessee
2 Additional classes of your choice in any subject
No class can count more than once.
Additional Workforce Development Requirements
No Out of School Suspension
Maintain 95% attendance for 4 years (No more than 36 total days missed in 4 years). Attendance exceptions can be requested for those students with unusual circumstances.
Maintain a C or above average in all classes. If your final class completion grade is a D or F you must retake that class and make at least a C to count that grade for the class.
Perform 80 hours or more volunteer service hours to help your community. These hours must be done before school or after school and cannot be counted as a grade or for pay. Mission trips can be counted as 8 hours per day you work. Please make sure you keep a log of your hours. Volunteer hours must be documented in Dr. Shaw's office by March 31.
See Dr. Shaw for an attendance exception request form.
It is not necessary to apply to TN Scholar directly through their website. Dr. Shaw will submit applications through the local Chamber of Commerce.

$18K Scholarship - American Legion High School Constitutional
As the 2019-2020 school year begins, so too begins many student searches for ways to fund a college education. The American Legion has provided a great opportunity for the last 80 years: participation in The American Legion Oratorical Contest. By writing and presenting an original speech focusing on the United States Constitution, the competitors can “earn” needed education money and develop a deep appreciation and knowledge of our country’s guiding document.
Tennessee students have done well in the past, receiving $3,000, $2,000 or $1,000 at the state level. The student who wins the 2020 State Contest will advance to the National Contest with a chance to win $18,000, $16,000 or $14,000 in Scholarships. Our state has had two National winners in the past. We would be delighted to add one of your student's names to this distinguished list.
Your support making contest information available to the students is vital to continuing the success of this program in your area. Your nearest American Legion Post would welcome the opportunity to sponsor and certify a contestant, and lead him or her through this exciting process! Information specific to the 2019 contest: rules, required forms, and critical deadlines are available on our website, www.tennesseelegion.org , by clicking on the “American Legion Oratorical” tab.

all felt that it was a good opportunity to find private scholarships. Good luck with
your scholarship applications!

Hi Seniors-
The email below went out to all Faculty and Staff at University School last week. Our Roan Scholar and Niswonger Scholar nominees are chosen by the faculty. However, you have the option to request that ANY faculty or staff member in the building nominate you to get your name on the list before the final vote. Before the final faculty/staff vote I will narrow the list based on nominations and how closely students meet the criteria for the award. We can only nominate one Roan Scholar and either one or two Niswonger Scholars each year. If you are interested and qualified, please request a nomination. Teachers may nominate more than one person.
Ms. Shaw
To ALL Faculty and Staff-
Many years ago we decided that the entire faculty and staff would nominate and vote on some of the high value scholars programs for which our students may be eligible. I will be taking nominations via email for both the Niswonger Scholar and Roan Scholar Program until August 20. If necessary, we will vote after that date. I have briefly outlined the requirements for the scholarship programs below. Students may request that you nominate them, but please ensure that they meet the minimal requirements as listed below. You may nominate more than one person.
Thanks!
Aleeta
Niswonger Scholarship Program
Nominees should:
-display leadership ability including character, drive, energy, initiative and work ethic
-display academic ability demonstrated through grades and standardized test scores
-display financial need not just equated with low income. Some middle class families are unable to afford the tuition at elite colleges and universities.
-be willing to commit to return to Northeast Tennessee for work and service in their chosen profession
Roan Scholars Program
Nominees should:
-be committed to attending East Tennessee State University
-selection is based on character, leadership, scholarship, and physical activity (does not have to be school sport)
-successful candidates need not be the students with the highest grade point average in the school, since nominations are based solely on ability and reflect well-rounded students with the most potential
Please check out the Levine Scholars Program at UNC-Charlotte. I can nominate at least one student, but I would like to know if anyone is interested to narrow my selection. Please respond to me by September 1.
Thank you!

University of Tennessee Scholarship Update
Greetings from Rocky Top!
In an effort to better serve you and your students, I am pleased to announce that the University of Tennessee has increased its investment in your best and brightest with a new institutional scholarship model, effective for all Fall 2015 entering students. The increased awards will be based on GPA and test score and do not require an essay. Please note, an essay component is still required for other programs and competitive awards for which your students may be applying.
The newly defined awards will be called Volunteer Scholarships.
Please note carefully the criteria below and feel free to share with your students. Eligibility is based on both a minimum 3.8 weighted UT core GPA and super-scored ACT or SAT scores in these ranges.
Minimum 3.8 weighted UT core GPA and . . .
Score Range |
In-State |
34-36 / 1490-1600 |
$8,000 |
30-33 / 1330-1480 |
$6,000 |
28-29 / 1250-1320 |
$3,000 |
Scholarship offer letters for these awards will soon be sent to students already admitted and many more who will be admitted. In addition, we will be promoting these great opportunities with a mailed postcard and an email to our prospects and applicants who have at least a 25 ACT. These will inform many of their scholarship potential and provide time for students to retest this fall should they choose. Upcoming ACT test dates are October 25 (will be considered for the November 1 deadline for competitive scholarships) and December 13. Upcoming SAT test dates are November 8 and December 6.
These important changes were made in part based on feedback from you, as well as students and families, who want to know, up front, the kind of scholarship support they will have when financing their UT education. And we want to reward students for the very hard work they are doing to prepare themselves for the next step in their education.
Deadlines:
- November 1: Priority Deadline for Admission and Scholarships (including competitive awards)
- December 1: Regular Deadline for Admission and Institutional Scholarships (including the new Volunteer Scholarship program)
- December 31: Updated Test Scores can be submitted through Dec. 31 to increase award amounts. We will allow for all Fall test dates.
- June 15: Updated transcripts and GPAs can be submitted to qualify for award amounts.
On a related topic students invited to UTs Volunteer Bridge program will have access to Tennessee Promise benefits (http://tennesseepromise.gov), but must apply for Tennessee Promise by the November 1 state deadline. Please encourage students with whom you are working, who might be a good fit for Bridge, to complete the state application process by November 1. Our Volunteer Bridge program is designed for students who fall below the academic profile of our incoming class, but whom we believe have great potential to add to our campus community. Vol Bridge students get to enjoy the UT residential first-year experience, while taking classes at Pellissippi State Community College. It is a wonderful pathway to a UT experience and education for students needing extra academic support to start their college careers.

Great scholarship update - MTSU
Greetings from your MTSU Admissions Counselor!
I hope this email finds you well and having a great school year! I wanted to share some important items with you regarding MTSU.
The biggest change that has occurred at MTSU is our guaranteed academic scholarship requirements. We have adjusted the ACT requirements in order to benefit students. I wanted to make sure you are aware of this as our website has only recently been updated. Students meeting the requirements for these scholarships simply need to complete their admissions application by December 1st, 2014. Specific requirements are at this link: http://www.mtsu.edu/financial-aid/scholarships/incoming-freshmen.php
MTSU will be hosting our annual True Blue Tour this year again in Knoxville and Johnson City! I have included those details at the bottom of the email. Our Preview Days this fall will take place on Saturday September 27th and Saturday November 1st. We also will be hosting several True Blue Experience Days on Friday this fall. More information can be obtained at www.mtsu.edu/RSVP . Please feel free to advertise this information on your websites, in newsletters, morning announcements, etc.
Each year we receive many inquiries about application fee waivers. The form can be downloaded from our website. Just a reminder that a student must meet both the academic requirement and the financial need requirement listed on the form.
Last fall we added a new program that we are extremely excited about here at MTSU! This program is Mechatronics Engineering-Click for more information. I believe this program would be of great interest to your students and particularly those involved in robotic organizations. Below is the official description of the program:
MTSUs new Mechatronics Engineering degree program is on the cutting edge of a fast-growing industry. Jobs are waiting for engineers to design and enhance robotics and automated systems. The design process of mechatronics combines mechanical, computer, and electrical engineering along with systems integration and technical project management. A surgical robot is a perfect example of a mechatronic system, performing precision mechanical work under sophisticated electronic and sensory control. Unlike traditional programs, MTSUs mechatronics has a systems approach, breaking the whole down into subsystems and then components, so that graduates can design products with a system in mind, not just one component. Rutherford County auto industry giants Bridgestone, with a mechatronics facility at its LaVergne education center, and Nissan are among worldwide and local partners in the program.
Is anyone considering UVA? If yes, then let me know ASAP in case you might be a candidate for the Jefferson Scholar Program. See info at http://www.jeffersonscholars.org/.
I recommend that you create an account on Fastweb or at least follow them on Twitter. You will get tons of announcements about scholarships. I liked this particular one because it features scholarships with short applications!
